Sounds

"FOrM-01" "FOrM-02" (Jul. 2004)

FOrM (Field Oriented Music)
by Ryota Kuwakubo (system), and MASAKI SAKAMOTO (Compose)

FOrM (Field Oriented Music) is an attempt to break up the time based
linier structure of music. On the field, the listeners will see
(encounter) numerous points. These points represent the sounds provided
in advance and possess one-shot or a loop sound. When listeners orient
the small cross to the points, a pointer indicated in small circle with
a cross will follow creating sounds. The pointer represents the
listening points. When the pointer comes close to (approaches) one of
these points, the sound possessed by the points will fade in or out (or
the one shot sound will be triggered). With this system (form), the
listeners will now be able to develop the music spatiotemporary.
Unlike previous music, which allowed only one-dimensional movement
through the past and future, FOrM has the freedom of two-dimensional
movements going upwards and sideways. The operator is now able to
produce organic sound by carefully selection the points (this truly is
a spatial description, which resembles to gardening.). As gardens has
an exceptional path, listener may not follow the orbit created by the
producer. These decisions by the listener will be an unexpected
encounter for the producer of the system and the gap being created
between the two will be something to be discussed on how to handle FOrM.
This time, we will present two fields. The fields can be changed
(inverted) by clicking the icon on the right corner. By clicking the
auto pilot icon, the pointer will automatically move and you will be
able to enjoy automatic music performance.

Field one (FOrM-01) is developed mainly for the one-shot type of sound and will
appear by detecting the listeners coming close to the points. It is
similar to the piano keys being placed (arranged) in two dimensions.
The sounds are of course positioned following the musical structures
(orders).
There are areas with group of open liberal codes, unrest sounds and
many more.
Field two (FOrM-02) is mainly arranged with loop-tracks and by passing through
the sound origins. The listeners can rearrange the amount of the mixing
loop-sound.
The sounds demonstrated here is former loop-sound containing linear
structure, and the development of music by fading in and out seems
rather like a DJ. Thus this may appear more familiar with the listeners.
